Having a child choose a career in the military must be filled with many emotions. But in a post-September 11th world, there is an extra dimension. No parent ever wants to envision their child in harm's way. I am hoping to connect with military Moms and Dads to get an insight into some of the emotions, barriers, feelings and reactions you had when your child announced their intention.
Some military families have a long-standing legacy of service to their country, but for others, it may come as more of a shock when a child announces they want to sign up.
I am interested in the degree to which parents can and do influence (or dissuade) the decision for a child to enter the military.
I would be so appreciative if you could type up your story and let me know how you felt when you understood this was going to happen. If you were opposed why? and how did you change your point of view. What were the selling points for you of having a child in the military? Any informaiton you wish to share about making the decison or helping a child to decide would be helpful. I will never reveal your name or your child's name. this is purely for my own research for a potential article and/or background for a fiction work.

Although I am not a military parent nor a wife-- my husband is a reporter who has covered wars for decades. He was injured in Iraq- so i understand the fears and consequences of having a loved one in a dangerous situation. And I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who serve their country.
