I don’t know. I had a declawed cat once. He was a stray, young but no longer a kitten. We tried to keep him indoor, but he hated being trapped inside and always found a way to escape. This cat brought home rabbits that were bigger than he was, could always be found up a tree or on the roof, fought the neighbors lab and won, and bested several neighborhood cats in fights. He lived indoors and outdoors for fifteen years. My cat may have been the exception to the rule, but other users on truu have posted similar stories, and I wonder if the people railing against the abuse of declawing a cat are missing a valid point.

There are a million unwanted cats. Am I against someone breeding and declawing a pure bread cat? Sure. But for most people cats are found in shelters or not the streets and would either live their lives as strays, or be euthanized in a shelter. Is death really better than being declawed? There are so many bigger issues to face in animal abuse. Wouldn’t it be better to start with the blatant cases and push for more spaying and neutering than to attack the pet owners who are trying to make adaptations that allow their pets to continue to live in their home?
